Candidate for ORSD School Board 2001

Judith Burke

From: Judith Burke — Candidate for School Board — 1 year position

To: Oyster River Cooperative School District residents:

I am a Candidate for ORSD School Board 2001 - 1 year Term (replacement position). My interest in serving the Oyster River Cooperative School District community in this one year position is a result of having had five years of prior School Board experience and a desire to "give back" to the community at large. My husband John and I, along with our children relocated our home to Durham a little over one year ago. After careful consideration of educational alternatives for our youngest daughter, who is a student in the ORCSD, we chose this community in which to live, and to ultimately retire into. It is with a strong commitment to public education and a sense of community that I embark on this venture.

I believe I have the experience needed and that I can offer a "fresh outlook" which will benefit the Oyster River School Board and consequently the community overall. In our former community, as a school board member, I served as Vice-Chair, a member of the NH School Boards Association, a member of the teacher contract negotiations committee, the space needs committee, the school accreditation committees (both elementary and middle school), several principal search committees (elementary, middle and high school), curriculum review committees, policy, technology, and budget committees. I am a consensus builder and a team player, and I am not afraid to voice my opinion or speak on behalf of my constituents. I always do my homework so that I will understand the issues at hand. I have been cited as fair and willing to listen.

Serving on a local school board has provided me with a sense of fiscal responsibility and accountability to the taxpayers. My main priority is to ensure quality of education for our students. To that end, I fully support updated facilities both in physical plant and technology, and the fostering of a learning community for our students and district employees.

I chose to run for the one-year position because I believe that with my experience I can be an effective member of the board immediately, as the first year of any new school board member is generally one of observing and learning. I understand the past and present educational issues within the district are challenging and this upcoming year will be a very important one in setting a course for commitment to education and fiscal responsibility. I ask that you vote for me for the one-year school board position, and let’s see what I can do for our students, and you, the taxpayers and community members. Thank you.
