Durham Library News

In December the UNH Dimond Library closed for renovations for the next 18 months. How can Oyster River students now find the books they need?

The first stop should be New Hampshire Hall on Main Street. Many of the circulating books will be in the gym there, available "self service." Materials not found in the stacks can be ordered and picked up a day or so later. (A computer catalogue will be there and at Nesmith Hall, across the street). Those who need help from a librarian or want to use reference books should go to Nesmith.

The 35,000-40,000 books of the Children's and Browse room collections now belong to the Town of Durham and will no longer be available through UNH. They are in storage, pending a March 11th vote by residents of Durham on whether to establish a Library Board of Trustees, thereby enabling the Town to start its own library. If the voters do not approve the library, those books will remain in storage or be disposed of.

However, if the library is approved, Friends of the Durham Public Library have raised money to cost-share the opening of a temporary library, perhaps in the Mill Road Plaza. Friends of the Library have also committed to helping finance the construction and cooperation of the new library through public and private fundraising.

If the new library is opened, people will be able to order UNH books through a shared on-line catalogue system, picking books up and returning them at the town library. This should be particularly helpful while Dimond is under renovation. For those turning to the Dover library during this period, a non-resident family card will be $67 per year starting in February.

Durham resident are urged to learn about the Durham library proposal through the newspapers and public information meetings before the vote.
