Library Corner

Our library media center has been busy over the last few weeks with orientations for students. Every class is welcomed in our reading well and then each student draws a fish (with his or her name inside) on the blue paper ocean. The library belongs to all of us, by signing in you become part of our library community.

The library media center is open to students throughout the school day. Each teacher has six passes to the library. Students come in independently all during the day. We promote a love of books and an understanding of information skills. The information access skills are taught collaboratively with the classroom teacher. Throughout the year I work with classroom teachers planning and then teaching students how to find the information they need. We do this in many ways depending on the classroom teacher's need. Sometimes we might have a class of 24 students divided into small groups of 6. Each group would come to the library 4 times. That would be 16 half hours. The teacher might want all the information gathered in the space of a week or spread out over a few weeks. We have a flexible library schedule, instead of rigid half hour library time, in order to accommodate all students and their information and reading needs. Our program is designed to prepare students for the 21st century.

We expect each child to come to the library each week to check out books. One way we check on library book use is by providing the classroom teacher with the monthly statistics of each students library book use. We promote books by exhibits, book talks, reading incentives, class discussions, genre studies, bibliographies to teachers, new books, classroom connections, collaborations with teachers, etc.

The library could not run without the wonderful parent volunteers who give two hours either every week or every other week. Our program is a collaboration between parents, teachers and librarian.
