HIGHLIGHTER

Professional Authors Enrich the Curriculum

Thanks to the financial support of O.R.E.W., the English Department invited five local authors to share their expertise and experience with Oyster River High School students this semester. In March, Rebecca Rule visited Advanced Writing, and two Writing Workshop classes. She talked to students about writing short stories and discussed her story, "Jane, My Ghost," from her collection The Best Revenge.

In April, journalist and editor David Cataneo of the Boston Herald met students in journalism, Advanced Writing and Writing Workshop. He focused on writing to meet deadlines, accuracy of reporting, and editing in newspaper work.

Phil Ginsburg joined us on May 3 to discuss his non-fiction work, Poisoned Blood and his work-in-progress, a fictionalized version of the same story. Students in Advanced Writing, Readings in Non-fiction and Writing Workshop exchanged ideas with Mr. Ginsburg.

Coming May 23 and May 29, respectively, Carolyn Coman, editor at Heinemann Press in Portsmouth and author of adolescent literature, and Ralph Fletcher, poet, will share their work with students in Advanced Writing and two Writing Workshop classes.

These authors give students significant opportunity to expand their understanding of the writing process, and ask questions about areas of writing that have perplexed them or with which they have grappled. We thank the authors and we thank O.R.E W. for their support.
