Team Design Inc. presented 2 conceptual designs to begin exploring how to renovate and expand ORHS this year. They named them plan A and plan B. The School Board and the Community Advisory Committee had a workshop to learn about, discuss, and give direction to Team Design Inc. for further design work. The School Board chose plan B as a starting point and suggested some areas to improve.
The main differences between plan A and plan B is the placement of the gym and cafeteria. Plan A places the gym behind the current building and the cafeteria remains in the same space but is extended forward towards Coe Drive. Plan B places the cafeteria behind the current building and the gym to the side of the current cafeteria. The current cafeteria would be used as a P.E. teaching space.
Both plans are built on a common core of classroom and administration space. Like last year's design, both have a classroom wing that crosses the main wing of the old building. Unlike last year, this wing is only 2 stories. The end of the old building where the Principal's office is currently will be demolished and replaced with a 2 story section. A small extension is added to provide an entrance opposite the new parking lot where the tennis courts are now.
Both plans convert the current gym into an auditorium/classroom. Since the current stage is too small and poorly positioned, the stage is rebuilt at the far end of the current gym. This area will have a raised ceiling, access for loading, and is close to art, industrial art, and music classrooms. To make the space work as a classroom, a section between the fixed seats and the stage will be movable so it can be at ground level or raised to the height of the stage.
