This week the voters of ORSD approved the bond for the expansion and renovation of ORHS. It received 62.6% with 1883 yes votes to 1124 no votes. It needed 60% to pass under a new law that applies only to districts which operate under SB2.
Now that the bond is approved, a lot of work must begin to complete the project by Spring of 2002. The conceptual designs will be reviewed one last time, detailed design will begin, and the first steps of the approval process will begin. And of course, we'll prepare to sell the bond. Enough of this paperwork must be done by next Spring so construction can begin.
The ORHS staff and Principal Cairns are reviewing the interior building plans one last time to be sure all the rooms are in the best place and to the best purpose. They are working with the architect Dan Bisson of Team Design Inc. This review will be done by Dec. 1.
Rist-Frost-Shumway are designing the mechanical systems for the high school. This includes the heating, ventilation and electrical systems. In particular, they are designing where the power transformers and boilers will be placed. This is complicated by the phasing of the project that calls for the first wing of classrooms to open next September. They need to be sure those new classrooms have power and heat while the wings around them are still under construction.
Gregg Mikolaities of AppleDore is designing the site plan. This is the first plan to seek approval from the town of Durham. Gregg Mikolaities and Bob Berry, our new Business Administrator, will meet next week with Durham officials to begin the review of the engineering and permitting process.
Bob Berry is also ready to file the papers needed to sell the bonds. The School Board will meet on Monday to decide on the bond agreement. The bond bank is eager to fold our bond into a bundle up for sale on Dec. 2. And, bond rates are moving down slightly...every little bit helps.
