Letter from Robert Kennedy (7/30/98)

Dear Ladies & Gentlemen:

Here are a few thoughts to consider at this meeting. They have already been expressed to the CAC in greater detail. I can provide copies of these on request on short notice.

Given:

  1. We need the repairs. Without them, the present building deteriorates, and we have nothing. A large part of these are not negotiable.
  2. We need more space. This has already been demonstrated. Further, the LRPC predicted this some years back.

I personally would prefer to have both, BUT IF it came to a choice between the two, I would opt for #1 as the second can be finessed by such temporary palliatives as modulars.

You may be able to get both if you cut the total for repairs and space to under $9M. NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE'S PERSONAL FEELINGS, THE BOND WILL GO NOWHERE UNLESS CERTAIN PET PROJECTS ARE GIVEN UP REGARDLESS OF MERIT.

I would further suggest to you that rather than try for a consensus recommendation from the CAC, you ask for both the majority opinion, if any, and one or more significant other or minority opinions. Given the size and composition of the CAC, you could very well wind up with a three way split.

To repeat in closing, we really do need both repairs and space.

Long live and prosper,

Bob Kennedy
