The Oyster River High School building in its present form is woefully inadequate for the level of technological integration that will be necessary for our curriculum in the future, both near and far.
We as a building have many short term goals that cannot be fully met utilizing the building's resources as they are: adding a second computer lab to increase student access, increasing the role of the Internet and other online/distance learning services, integrating library automation and expansion. Our long term goals of a more powerful programming lab and full screen/full motion multimedia and digital video, and a computing station in each classroom will also be hampered by the building's present state.
The building presently can not handle the electrical power requirements that will be needed; it already is overloaded in many areas. The network that has been installed is working perfectly for Internet access, but will not have the capacity to handle distance learning, cable TV, and telecommunication signals. There will be a need for fiber-optic cabling.
The building also will require a room or two for larger group activities such as distance learning, speakers, debates etc... This room would be equipped with an "information spigot1", wide screen TV/monitor, computer with network access, and comfortable seating for 100.
1 An outlet for phone, cable and network access. All classrooms should be equipped with one.
