Durham is a town located on the Oyster River in the seacoast area of New Hampshire. It is in Strafford County and has about 12,000 residents (11,818 in 1990 and 10,652 in 1980). It is the seat of the University of New Hampshire.
Durham was settled in 1635 as part of Dover. It became a separate parish of Oyster River in 1716, and incorporated in 1732 and renamed after Durham, England. It originally included the town of Lee, and parts of Madbury and Newmarket.
Durham is part of the Oyster River Cooperative School District. Two Oyster River schools are located in Durham: Oyster River Middle School and Oyster River High School.
